Christmas Mince Pie Paddle

Mince Pie Paddle Sunday 18th December

We are having our traditional Mince Pie Paddle at 10 (ish) on Sunday 18th December 2016. There will be the usual bonfire (we may need everyone to help gathering wood). Tea, coffee and squash will be provided and possibly mulled wine. Please bring some nibbles to share – cold or hot to be heated on the fire, savoury or sweet. We’ll hope for some good water too!

Isle de la Serre – July 2017

isle de la serreFrance – Isle de la Serre, Saturday 22nd – Saturday 29th July 2017
Come and join WAM members for a week of warm water paddling!

This is a week’s whitewater trip to the French Whitewater Course, Espace Eau Vive, Isle de la Serre, midway between Geneva and Lyon.
The course is suited to surfing and flat spinning, ideal for paddlers who enjoy playing. You would need to be confident on the Dart Loop to enjoy this.
The course is constructed in a loop, so one has minimal walking with the boat. There are other adrenalin-filled activities such as hydro-speeding and hot-dogging. One can, of course, just river-run the course if one wants to.

There is a flattish bottom section for paddlers not at this level, but you would need to be confident at self-rescuing and would need someone else to paddle with.

There is usually a visit to the challenging surf wave at the Saint Pierre de Boeuf course, the other side of Lyon.

Accommodation is on the campsite adjacent to the course. No real shade so bring your own! Prices are extremely cheap
: camping is 5.50 – 7.40 euros per person per night (the lesser amount for a group of 6 or more). Water access is 4.60 euros per day. (2016 prices)

One warning: the toilet facilities are mainly stand-up.

The course is midway between Lyon and Geneva – 38390 Porcieu, at Sault Brenaz, just past Bourg en Bresse ie a distance of c550 miles. Google Espace Eau Vive.

Fuel and tolls are the most expensive items on this trip.

River Dart – Loop Trip 2017

Friday 20th January – Sunday 22nd January 2017

For those who don’t know the Dart, this delightful Grade 3 section of the river requires a reasonably reliable whitewater roll. You should be competent at paddling in flow below the bridge at Yalding. In very high water levels, decisions will be made on suitability for paddling. We occasionally padle the Walkham or the Tavy, depending on water levels. Last year, a small group also paddled the Upper Dart.
Accommodation for Friday and Saturday nights is in Powder Mills Bunkhouse, on the B3212 just north of Two Bridges (Grid reference SX628 769), where we have stayed for the last couple of years. The address is Powder Mills
Bunkhouse, Princetown, Yelverton, Devon PL20 6SP; details at http://www.powdermillsbunkhouse.co.uk. You need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow and towel, plus warm clothing as the fire is sometimes slow to warm up the bunkhouse. Mobile phone signal is poor. Satnav can be dubious

Cooked breakfasts for Saturday and Sunday, and an evening meal for Saturday will be provided. Please let us know if you are vegetarian. Everyone is expected to join in and help. There will be chocolate bars for on the river, a sandwich for the journey home, and tea and coffee. You will need to find your own food for Friday night, but cheese and biscuits will be available. Please bring any drink you want.

The cost, including food, will be £35 per person. Please send cheques, payable to Whitewater Action Medway, to Gary Jenkins, 25 Morgans Way, Hevingham, Norfolk NR10 5PD, or alternatively request bank details for a BACs transfer. Cash can be paid at pool sessions. Please make payment asap to secure your place.

The bunkhouse will accept dogs, but Martin at Powder Mills requests that the dogs are not long-haired and moulting, as he has to hoover!
